Here’s the exact difference between dry and dehydrated skin– plus the fix for each one so you know how to avoid it.
First things first, let’s get a handle on what dry skin is and what dehydrated skin is.
🤎Dry skin is a genetic skin type. Your skin is not dry because of something you did, it is just part of your unique genetic makeup. Dry skin means you are lacking oils.
🤎Dehydrated skin is a temporary skin condition. This happens when your skin is lacking moisture and can be a result of weather conditions or harsh products. Dehydrated skin means you are lacking water.
🔑The key is to know how to layer your products. This is done in two parts.
Part One: In the Shower 🚿
Start with some body wash to create a clean surface before you start layering your products. This is also your time to exfoliate– more on how to exfoliate based on which skin problem you’re focusing on below. You can exfoliate in different ways based on your preference. Check out body scrubs, exfoliating nets, and dry bristle brushes to start.
Part Two: Locking in Moisture 🧴
When you get out of the shower, do not fully dry off. This is crucial for your body care routine. When your skin is damp, body care products absorb better. On your damp, not dripping, skin, apply body butter. Remember, a little bit goes a long way. The moisture on your skin will help the body butter fully absorb and not leave your skin feeling greasy. Next, top off your skin with body oil to lock in the moisture. For an extra shine, you can even add some shimmer oil either mixed into your body butter or as a final step. To prevent your skin from drying out, keep a little bottle of body oil in your purse for on the go application. Add a drop to your skin when you feel like you’re starting to dry out.
How do you know which skin problem you’re tackling? With a quick self-check.
All you need to do is give your cheek a little pinch– the aftermath will give you your results.
If you have dry skin, after you pinch your cheek the skin will bounce right back, but it will feel flakey.
If you have dehydrated skin, after you pinch your cheek your skin will take a couple seconds to bounce back and will leave fine lines.
🧴The Fix For Dry Skin
Your skin is craving richer oils and less frequent exfoliation. We know that the key to glowing is to exfoliate, hydrate and moisturize, but we need to adapt our routines to our skin needs. Dry skin needs to be treated gently. If it is over-exfoliated, it will become irritated. A light, gentle exfoliation once a week is all you need. Your main focus is on getting rich oils into your skin. This can easily be accomplished by finding a good body oil that has avocado oil, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil.
💧The Fix For Dehydrated Skin
Your skin is quenching for thirst. And the best way for your skin to regain hydration is to apply body care products while it’s damp. The key for dehydrated skin is incorporating humectants. A humectant is an ingredient that pulls moisture from the air or from a deeper layer of the skin and brings it to the surface. This keeps your skin hydrated. Common humectants include hyaluronic acid, glycerol, aloe vera, and honey.
When you have the right tools to manage your skin, it becomes so much easier to start seeing the results you’ve been looking for. Your skin is not broken. It’s just searching for the right body care order.
