Your 7-Step Summer Skin Prep Checklist (Including the Steps Almost Everyone Skips)

Your 7-Step Summer Skin Prep Checklist (Including the Steps Almost Everyone Skips)

You made it — here's the full 7-step summer skin prep checklist, including the steps almost everyone skips.

If you've been moisturizing every single day and your skin still doesn't feel soft, glowy, or ready for summer — you're not doing it wrong. You're just missing a sequence. Summer skin isn't about more products. It's about the right steps, in the right order. That's it.

Here's the full ritual.

Step 1: Exfoliate First — Always

Dead skin is a barrier. It sits on the surface and blocks everything else you apply from actually absorbing. Before you moisturize, before you oil, before anything — you need a clean canvas.

Use the African Exfoliating Net in the shower, 2–3 times a week. It lifts away dry, dull buildup without harsh scrubbing. Smooth skin absorbs moisture better, reflects light better, and genuinely glows in photos. This is the non-negotiable first step.

Step 2: Moisturize on Damp Skin

This one changes everything.

Most people dry off completely and then apply body butter or lotion. The problem? Dry skin can't seal in what isn't there. When you apply moisture to damp skin — right out of the shower, while there's still a thin layer of water on your body — you're sealing that water in. It's hydration layering, and it makes your products work at least twice as hard.

Pat lightly. Don't rub dry. Apply immediately.

Step 3: Layer Oil Over Butter to Lock It In

Order matters more than most people realize.

Butter first, oil second. The body butter delivers deep moisture. The oil seals it in by creating a barrier that slows evaporation. If you apply oil first, the butter can't penetrate as deeply. If you skip the oil entirely, moisture escapes throughout the day.

This two-step lock is why your skin can feel soft at 8am but dry again by noon — the seal is missing.

Step 4: Time It Right (Morning vs. Night)

Your morning routine and your nighttime routine should not be identical.

Morning: Focus on light hydration + oil seal. You want absorption, not heaviness. Let your skin breathe under clothing or in the sun.

Nighttime: This is when your skin repairs itself. Apply a more generous layer of body butter and let it work while you sleep. You'll wake up noticeably softer within a week.

Step 5: Target the Neglected Spots

Knees. Elbows. Heels. The backs of your arms.

These areas have fewer oil glands and thicker skin — which means they need more attention, not less. They're also the first places that look ashy or rough in summer photos. Make them a specific focus during every nighttime routine.

One way to think about it: your knees and elbows are telling on you. Give them the same care as the rest of your body.

Step 6: Protect What You're Building

Sunscreen isn't just about SPF protection — it preserves the work you're doing.

UV exposure breaks down moisture faster, deepens hyperpigmentation, and undoes exfoliation results. You don't need a separate body sunscreen routine (though it helps). At minimum, be intentional about sun exposure on freshly exfoliated skin, which is more sensitive. Pair sun care with your morning routine to protect the hydration you've locked in.

Step 7: The Weekly Reset

Once a week, give your skin a full reset. This means:

  • A full exfoliation session with the net and a body scrub
  • A generous double-moisture treatment (butter and oil together, applied generously)
  • Extra time on problem areas — knees, elbows, heels

Think of it as your weekly skin audit. You're checking in, addressing anything that needs extra attention, and re-priming for the week ahead. Five minutes is enough. Consistency is everything.

The Simply Bare Toolkit for This Ritual

You don't need a shelf full of products. You need the right ones, used correctly:

  • African Exfoliating Net — your exfoliation anchor for steps 1 and 7
  • Body Butter — deep moisture applied to damp skin, every time

That's it. The ritual does the work. The products just support it.
